Your help is needed now more than ever!

I am writing you today asking you to join me and the other people who have signed the petition against The MOTHERS Act. This Act, if passed, will implement "education," "screening," and "treatment" programs for depression and psychosis funded by taxpayers. The plan is to screen every expectant and new mother in the USA for psychiatric disorders as defined by a scale created by psychiatrists and get any woman at risk for or who shows warning signs of depression or psychosis into psychiatric treatment. Far from benefiting mothers or society, this legislation will only increase prescriptions with drugs such as "antidepressants" and anticonvulsants which carry black box warnings for doubling the risk of suicide, and have effects such as inducing homicide, mania, and psychosis (the risk of psychosis while taking an antidepressant is increased tenfold according to the package label, compared to the risk of developing psychotic symptoms following childbirth in general - 1/100 versus 1/1000). These drugs also cause spontaneous abortion, neonatal death, SIDS, and life-threatening birth defects such as heart defects and often fatal lung disorders in newborns. Antidepressant drugs are well known for causing discontinuation syndrome making it nearly impossible for many people to safely withdraw from the "medications." Women who take these drugs following the birth of a child may become pregnant again without being able to get off the drugs, putting their unborn babies in serious danger.

To date we have received signatures from such amazing child advocates as Marilyn Milos of NOCIRC and Dr. Deborah Takikawa of What Babies Want. Our petition has also been endorsed and circulated on the Hathor the Cowgoddess Website (http://www.thecowgoddess.com/2008/02/13/help-stop-the-mothers-act/). There are also many other celebrities who have signed our petition. The organizations already backing this petition consist of thousands of members, including survivors of the drugs or family members of those lost because of these drugs as well as prominent psychiatrists and psychologists, researchers and advocates. Signing the petition is absolutely essential and very easy to do. I ask that you immediately go to this url to sign your name either individually or as a representative of your organization (please write in the comments if you are endorsing it for your organization). http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/stop-the-dangerous-and-invasive-mothers-act

You can sign anonymously if desired.

Then, I ask that you take additional steps to help us stop this nightmare from being passed. Call or fax the 21 Senators on the HELP Committee and demand that this bill not pass. (See the contact information at http://www.uniteforlife.org/mothersactupdate.htm#contact) Ask them to instead pass a ban on future similar acts which promote FDA-confirmed DANGEROUS drugs to pregnant and new mothers or women of childbearing age. It is highly shocking that these drugs were ever approved considering that the FDA knew the drugs were ineffective treatments for depression. What is more shocking, however, is that our government would consider attempting to get even more women on these drugs, especially during a time in their lives when these women and their children are incredibly vulnerable. What kind of person would encourage a government program to target these vulnerable women?

This effort is not about denying any woman the right to make her own choice of treatment should she feel the need to take a drug. This is about protecting our rights as human beings, protecting our children's lives, protecting motherhood itself, and safeguarding our future.

After you sign the petition, please contact amy@uniteforlife.org immediately to add your name or organization to a list of  those who oppose the MOTHERS Act and any bill like it. We will fax this list to all 21 Senators on the HELP Committee as soon as possible. This is extremely urgent because the HELP Committee considers this bill on Wednesday, March 5. From there it could go to the Senate floor for nearly final passage quite  quickly. It has already been passed overwhelmingly by the House and all that will be required will be for the House to approve any changes to wording from the Senate, and for President Bush to sign the bill. Postpartum Support International is already prepared to expedite the implementation of their proposed legislation, with coordinators in many states ready to ensure compliance.

Thank you for your support and assistance. I look forward to hearing from you about your organization's opposition to the MOTHERS Act.
