Subject: MOTHER ACT / from a Swiss doctor

Dear Sir,

I am Dr. Franceschetti, MD, of Geneva Switzerland. I am very much involved in the quality of medicine delivered, and in the rights of patients.

I took the opportunity to write you, as recently there are big changes in the medical world which are of interest concening this program. I appreciate your taking time for reading my message.

At first glance, the mother act looks like a rational program which will increase the life quality of mothers. For every person having compassion, this act should be passed. However, the reality is somehow different. Particularly in the light of very recent medical issue in medical magazines.

I have heard and read about the mother act, and there is a point of view which is not shared by European doctors, except the one involved with pharmaceutical companies : for the period after child delivery, the compassion and the fact of giving psychotropics drugs are not fully compatible. If the drugs were efficient and devoid of dramatic sides effects, this program would really be an excellent idea. However in the last 2 months, the medical issue in the very serious medical magazines has proven that the efficiency of antidepressants are widely overestimated. The last article (last week) has proved that in the majority of depression, placebo and antidepressant are equal in efficiency. It is a revolution in the medical world, and a lot of doctors are puzzled by this discovery. This is changing totally the way of considering the mental troubles, and to be honest, we are not really prepared for such a revolution.

Furthermore, it is a natural evolution to feel bad after the child delivery, and every mother has felt it in a more or less manner. Simple care, enough sleep, correct diet, and a lot of warmth around her is an excellent solution for a large majority of them. The argument put forward : if the mother is not treated, it can result in a drama ; this hasnʼt been proved, and to be blunt it is a brilliant marketing argument, which doesnʼt take into consideration what is really happening and the efficiency of other solution.

I have seen too many drama relating to psychotropics drugs, with all of them. This should urge us to find any alternative solution before giving them, specially when we know that violence is often related to those psychotropics drugs. The child than become at risk, and we must protect the child. In fact, passing such a bill will really be dangerous for the safety of children, and nobody want this.

As I have no doubt of your dedication for the family, I hope this would be of some help, although I am not a american citizen.

Yours faithfully,

Nicolas Franceschetti
