(This article, despite the error in the original version, is a fantastic example of mainstream media taking on tough issues and we think they did a tremendous job. We thank TIME and Catherine Elton for the exposure of medication dangers and feel that it will undoubtedly help millions find the information that they need to be safe and survive. Please share this article and spread the word about the opposition to The MOTHERS Act.) This month in the July 20 issue of TIME Magazine, Catherine Elton writes about The MOTHERS Act in an article titled "The Melancholy of Motherhood." There was apparently a misunderstanding and as a result the print version of the magazine contains an egregious error. The magazine states that Amy Philo had fears of hurting her son Isaac and then states that she was prescribed Zoloft, implying that the prescription was for PPD and that Amy was unstable prior to starting the medication. On the contrary, Amy Philo was prescribed Zoloft for anxiety after her newborn baby almost died from choking on formula at Children's Hospital. Only after three days of Zoloft treatment did she experience any fears that she might hurt her baby. This has been well-documented in the media and the story has been consistently depicted online since 2005.This is the first time that a media organization has made this particular type of mistake regarding her story. TIME Magazine retracted the statement and made a correction to the online version of the story on July 12. The print retraction is scheduled to appear in TIME Magazine in about two weeks. Please spread the word about the error in order to minimize rumors and misunderstandings. You can read about this more here: The Bitter Pill: "TIME Magazine Retracts False Statement About Amy Philo" http://tinyurl.com/nb9nd2 The story about the error has also received coverage on a top health blog called Beyond Meds, here: http://tinyurl.com/muv9un Due to the nature of print media UNITE requests assistance in circulating this article concerning the mistake and its correction. We encourage you to spread the word for the sake of The MOTHERS Act fight and all those who see the article and might be making choices about taking psychotropic medications. Email
